5 ways to make open enrollment communication easier to read

Open enrollment is the one time of year most employees make decisions about their benefits, and they often do it in a hurry. The clearer your materials are, the more confident those decisions will be. Here are five simple ways to make enrollment communication easier to read.

1. Lead with what's new

Put plan changes, new options and key dates on the first page. Employees who only skim should still know what changed and what they need to do. Then use short sections and plain language (2), compare plans side by side (3), and finish every piece with a clear next step (4).

“When employees truly understand their benefits, they make better decisions for themselves and their families.”

5. Repeat the message in more than one format: a guide, a short narrated video, a microsite, and email and text reminders as the deadline approaches.

  • Plain language beats jargon
  • One clear call to action
